About the Artwork
Named after the Renaissance artist Donatello di Niccolo di Betto Bardi, who was a sculptor in Florence.
This piece was added later on to the collection due to several requests to add on the fourth “ninja turtle.” Although I didn’t intend to copy the Ninja Turtles, I do think the collection looks better when all four Italian Renaissance artists are displayed together.
Donatello popularized the technique for communicating motion in inanimate stone. This technique called, figura serpentinata, was later used by the other 3 Italian Renaissance artists- Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael- to create life within their sculptures. Although I am not a sculptor, I like to think I adopted a similar tactic within this painting as a way to honor Donatello.
Cheetahs are known for being the fastest animal on the planet, so it seems only natural to portray the cheetah running within this piece. Just like Donatello’s sculptures, I love being able to bring my artwork to life.
